It has to be said that ‘Charlie’ this magnificent mallard drake, who has become something of a popular icon within Paul’s collection of paintings, takes centre stage in this particular piece. He’s rather wet looking after the recent rainfall and stood amidst some interesting reflections in the puddle that captures the graffiti strewn wall on a canal-side towpath.
Paul’s urban collection was inspired from his days living and working from his narrowboat ‘Fools Paradise?’ when he saw various waterfowl living as much within city and town landscapes as the countryside. In earlier works he was very much influenced by the graffiti that he saw, but as time has progressed, he’s developed his own content and style. Unlike actual spray-painted graffiti he uses traditional painting techniques to make it looked as though the writing has been sprayed upon the wall.
