Denise Dutton is a British figurative sculptor known for her ability to convey the soul and vitality of her subjects. After completing a foundation course at Cambridge College of Art and Technology, Denise pursued her studies at the Sir Henry Doulton School of Sculpture in Stoke-on-Trent. The rigorous three-year program allowed her to combine her love for figurative work with her passion for horses, leading her to study equine anatomy at veterinary schools in London and Cambridge.
Denise’s artistic philosophy revolves around capturing the spirit and story of her subjects. This commitment is evident in her sculptures of horses, which showcase their poise, movement, and behavior with remarkable sensitivity and anatomical accuracy. Her work process is meticulous, beginning with observational studies and drawings that inform her initial maquettes. For larger pieces, she constructs armatures herself before sculpting in clay, with the transition to bronze undertaken only when the piece is ready for casting.
Over her career, Denise has exhibited her work in prestigious locations, including London and Lichfield. Her sculptures range from large-scale public commissions to smaller, limited-edition pieces, all crafted with an intimate connection to her subjects. Whether working on a private commission or creating from personal inspiration, Denise’s sculptures tell compelling stories that resonate with viewers.
Today, sculpture and drawing remain integral to Denise’s daily life, alongside her enduring love for animals and the natural world. Her work continues to inspire and captivate, celebrating the beauty and grace of her subjects through the timeless medium of bronze.
